Microbiome Innovation Takes Center Stage at Sweetch

Sweetch is showcasing a range of cosmetic ingredients at the ongoing NYSCC Suppliers’ Day 2026 trade show in New York City, US (May 19-20). The company’s display includes solutions for skin microbiome support, decorative beads for cosmetic formulations, and a texture-modifying emulsifier for sun care products.

Speaking with Personal Care Insights from the show floor, Sébastien Kerverdo, chief commercial officer at Sweetch, shared insights into the ingredients on display, their applications, and the growing interest in skin microbiome-focused cosmetics.

“Ten years ago, probiotics and microbiomes were not very well known… but the skin microbiome is getting more and more important now,” Kerverdo says.

Supporting the Skin Microbiome

One of the featured ingredients is preBiulin FOS, a high-purity hydrolyzed inulin prebiotic sourced from chicory root. By drawing on the natural probiotic properties of chicory root, preBiulin FOS supports the skin’s natural ecosystem and helps preserve favorable skin bacteria.

The ingredient is said to strengthen the skin barrier’s defenses against external stressors such as pollutants, preservatives, and ethanol. These characteristics make it suitable for formulations designed for sensitive and acne-prone skin while helping the skin cope with changing environmental conditions.

According to Kerverdo, preBiulin FOS can be used as a prebiotic in shampoos to help rebalance the scalp microbiome. It can likewise be incorporated into skin care solutions to preserve the microbiome, reduce skin conditions, and help avoid itchiness and redness.

He describes two key ways formulators can use the ingredient:

“First, for regular gradient suppliers to be sure that their ingredient doesn’t disturb the balance of microorganisms, and on the other hand to develop actives that will support this community of microorganisms to remain well-balanced and in symbiosis with all skin functions.”

Decorative Pearls Without Microplastics

Alongside preBiulin FOS, Sweetch is presenting its NatPearls range, which provides both sensory and aesthetic benefits through decorative beads available in different color combinations.

The range includes NatPearl Cherry, NatPearl Olive, and NatPearl Pure. The naturally derived carrier system consists of spherical beads that allow brands to create recognizable visual identities in their formulations.

Kerverdo also addressed sustainability and the increasingly strict regulations affecting this category. He noted that the ingredients do not contain microplastics and said the “naturally sourced” beads are expected to become Cosmos compliance-approved “very soon.”

Creating Lighter Sun Care Textures

The company is also highlighting an emulsifier designed for sun care applications. Kerverdo points out that high-SPF sun care formulations can often have what he describes as a “tacky sensoriality.”

“Our emulsifier helps to get rid of this tacky skin feeling, and also to make an emulsion with a very low viscosity, meaning it is sprayable and stable with good texture and low viscosity.”

According to Kerverdo, the emulsifier is particularly suited to light sun care products that leave a light feeling on the skin. He says the ingredient responds to consumer demand for daily sun protection products with lighter textures.
