The Skin Elasticity & Firmness Test is a scientific assessment used to measure the mechanical properties of the skin, specifically its ability to return to its original shape after being gently stretched. This test provides objective evidence for claims such as “improves skin firmness,” “improves elasticity,” or “reduces signs of aging.”

Purpose of the test

The purpose of this test is to determine whether a cosmetic product improves the elastic recovery and firmness of the skin by improving collagen and elastin function or by improving hydration in the deeper skin layers. This test is particularly relevant for products that ageing, lifting and skin rejuvenation .

Methodology

The study is conducted as a device test using a Cutometer or equivalent device that measures the skin’s ability to deform and return to its original position. The instrument gently suctions the skin surface and records how the skin moves in response—providing accurate data on elasticity, firmness, and viscoelasticity.

  • Number of volunteers: 10

  • Measurement points: Two measurements are taken – T0 (before applying the product) and T1 (after application) – under standardized environmental conditions (temperature and humidity).

  • Number of samples required: 11 samples of finished products

Test procedure

  1. Selection of volunteers: Ten adult participants with varying skin firmness are selected.

  2. Baseline measurement (T0): Skin firmness and elasticity are measured on untreated skin using the Cutometer.

  3. Apply product: A specific amount of the test product is applied to the designated area (usually the face, forearm, or neck).

  4. Measurement after application (T1): After a certain period of time (usually 30 minutes to several hours), the measurements are repeated.

  5. Data comparison: The results from T0 and T1 are analyzed to determine the improvement in firmness and elasticity.

Evaluated parameters

  • Immediate and short-term improvement in elasticity

  • Firmness ratio (R2) – the skin’s ability to recover after deformation

  • Maximum deformation (R0) – related to the skin’s suppleness

  • Viscoelastic behavior (R6-R8 parameters) – indicates deep structural resilience

  • Statistical significance of improvements after application

Sample requirements

  • Quantity: 11 samples of finished products

  • Condition: Unopened, stable, and suitable for external use

  • Product types: Anti-aging creams, firming serums, lifting gels, or body-firming products

Results and report

The laboratory report includes:

  • Description of test conditions and equipment

  • Graphs and data curves showing elasticity and stiffness

  • Statistical analysis of elasticity parameters (R0, R2, R5, etc.)

  • Comparative summary of T0 vs. T1 measurements

  • Interpretation confirming skin-firming or anti-aging effects

Why this test is important

The Skin Elasticity & Firmness Test provides quantitative, verifiable data that demonstrates the efficacy of anti-aging and firming formulas. It supports marketing and labeling claims such as:

  • “Improves skin firmness and resilience”

  • “Restores elasticity and suppleness”

  • “Visibly lifts and firms the skin”

This test is essential for product substantiation, marketing approval, and clinical documentation and provides a scientifically validated way to confirm the firming and rejuvenating effects of cosmetic formulas.
