Specific National Requirements for Labelling

In the cosmetic industry, labeling plays a crucial role in conveying important information about product safety, usage, and environmental impact. Under Cosmetic Regulation, essential labeling elements such as the product name, ingredients list, and warnings must be clearly presented. Additionally, companies sell their cosmetics in France and Italy must adhere to specific national requirements for labelling, including the Triman and symbols related to UNI technical standards. These symbols instruct consumers on proper waste disposal and emphasize the recycling of the product’s packaging.

France

In France, the new Triman logo + sorting instructions has been mandatory on the labels of recyclable products, including cosmetics. For all products to be placed on the market, with Decree No. 2014-15733, effective January 1, 2022 should comply with this rule.

The Triman symbol aims to inform the consumer that the product must be recycled properly. Additional provisions  in France mandates the sorting instructions must also be included on the label in the national language.

A transitional period has been granted until March 9, 2023.  After that date, packaging that does not comply with the new Triman symbol rules is prohibited from being placed on the French market.

Italy

All products to be sold in Italy must contain environmental label within the scope of Decree No. 116 of September 3, 2020. The symbol provides, facilitate the collection, reuse, recovery and recycling of packaging, to inform consumers about the final destination of the packaging.

The relevant decision entered into force as of January 1, 2022. However, currently available products on the market can be placed on the market without new environmental labeling requirements until their stocks run out.
