Black seed oil has shown potential to improve hair density and reduce hair loss in a 28-day clinical study. The study used a scalp lotion containing 5% of a cold-pressed black seed oil ingredient, which contains 3% thymoquinone and has low free fatty acids. The research involved 22 adults across genders. The findings showed a 35% reduction in hair loss, a 7% increase in hair density, visible stimulation of hair growth, and improved scalp comfort and hydration.

Positive results after 28 days

The study examined dermatological tolerance, standardized dry hair loss, and hair density. Participants applied the scalp lotion once a day for 28 days and were evaluated both at baseline and when the study was completed.
The results were supported by participants’ own observations. Some 82% reported a visible reduction in hair loss and visible stimulation of hair growth. A total of 77% said their hair felt stronger and had more volume.
The formula was described as having an inoffensive sensory profile, with 95% of participants saying it was gentle and suitable for the scalp. The clinical results showed potential for reducing hair loss and improving the appearance of the hair.

Four ways the ingredient supports hair and scalp health

Findings related to dandruff and seborrhea

A previous in vitro study on a 5% scalp serum showed efficacy for seborrhea, dandruff, irritation, redness, and itchiness.
The 28-day study examined symptoms of mild to moderate seborrheic dermatitis in adults. Topical use of the serum resulted in significant improvements from baseline in scalp irritation, erythema, itchiness, scaling, and overall scalp health. It helped reduce scalp oiliness as well.
The formulation containing 5% standardized black seed oil may have the potential to inhibit the overgrowth of opportunistic pathogens. This could support maintenance of a healthy skin microbiome and help modulate symptoms in people prone to seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
