What is 1,4-dioxane?

1,4-Dioxane is not an ingredient we intentionally add to products; it is a substance that can form unintentionally during manufacturing processes. You may encounter it in products that create foam, such as shampoos, liquid soaps, dishwashing detergents, bath foams, shower gels, and even toothpaste. In addition to cosmetics and personal care products, low concentrations may sometimes be found in certain cleaning products and even in food packaging.

How is 1,4-dioxane formed?

This substance is usually formed during the ethoxylation process, in which SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), which can be irritating to the skin, is converted into SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate), a milder alternative. This conversion is a commonly used method to make products lather more gently and effectively. However, 1,4-dioxane can be a byproduct of this process. Products containing ingredients such as SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate), PEG compounds (Polyethylene Glycol, Polyethylene), Ceteareth, and Oleth are at a higher risk of containing 1,4-Dioxane. These ingredients are often used in many everyday products as moisturizers, emulsifiers, or solvents.

Effects on Human Health

1,4-Dioxane is easily absorbed through the skin. This absorption can increase, especially with bath products that warm the skin and open the pores, such as during a hot shower or bath. Both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classify 1,4-dioxane as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B). This classification indicates that exposure to the substance carries potential risks. Research suggests that 1,4-Dioxane can cause harmful effects on the liver, kidneys, lungs, and the central nervous system. More serious health problems may arise with prolonged or high exposure.
